Amazon Targets Merchandise Exports Worth $20 Billion From India by 2025

Amazon Global Trade, initially launched in 2015 with a small pool of vendors, has steadily gained momentum in India’s e-commerce landscape. The platform, connecting businesses to consumers (B2C) for exports, is now eyeing merchandise exports totaling $20 billion by 2025.

An Amazon official highlighted the company’s intent to achieve this ambitious target by enrolling numerous small-scale sellers onto their e-commerce platform. Bhupen Wakankar, director of global trade at Amazon, expressed enthusiasm about the surge in entrepreneurial sign-ups this year and emphasized plans for substantial expansion in exports.

Wakankar specifically noted a robust demand for Indian-made organic health supplements, homeware items like bath towels and jute rugs, as well as robotic games for children in anticipation of the Black Friday Cyber Monday sale—a shopping extravaganza spanning 11 days.

Since its inception, Amazon Global Trade has integrated over 100,000 small manufacturers, enabling them to showcase a diverse array of products to international clientele, with a notable proportion being first-time exporters, some transitioning from corporate roles to embark on e-commerce ventures.

This initiative has been pivotal for numerous small-scale exporters who previously encountered barriers to accessing global markets. With an impressive 70 percent annual business growth facilitated by the e-commerce platform, these exporters benefit from logistical support and a vast reach, tapping into Amazon Prime’s extensive membership base of over 200 million worldwide.

Interestingly, India’s overall goods exports observed a 7 percent year-on-year decline in the initial seven months of the fiscal year, contrasting with the exponential growth witnessed on Amazon’s platform, especially in categories such as beauty, apparel, home goods, kitchenware, furniture, and toys.

The surge in sales corresponds to various festive occasions including Halloween, Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, and New Year, with Indian products gaining traction in markets spanning the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and Germany.

To incentivize exporters, Amazon has significantly reduced the subscription fees for its global selling program, offering a reduced fee of $1 (approximately Rs. 84) for the first three months, down from the original $120 (nearly Rs. 1,000), for exporters signing up before March 31st.
